SOLID-FLOW Tool

SOLID-FLOW is a modelling tool developed by Université Gustave Eiffel within the SPLOTT research laboratory, as part of the SOLID-SMA project. Its objective is to reconstruct the quantities and types of goods produced, consumed and traded by economic establishments, providing detailed data to support freight demand modelling.

The model relies on a constrained statistical disaggregation framework, combining national Supply and Use Tables (SUTs) with complementary statistics on production, consumption, international trade and business activities. Applied to France for the reference year 2022, it estimates commodity flows across approximately 1,700 transportable product categories and 732 economic activities, ultimately allocating them to 5.58 million establishments.

SOLID-FLOW follows a modular architecture comprising ten successive modules. These cover the reconstruction of national product balances; the allocation of production and consumption to economic activities; the estimation of merchandise flows handled by wholesale and retail establishments; the treatment of inventories and international trade; the conversion of monetary flows into physical quantities; and their final allocation to individual establishments. Each module combines specific statistical sources and calibration procedures while maintaining consistency with national accounting constraints.

Three resources are currently available for download (ZIP file - 5.37 MO) ::

  • Technical paper: a detailed description of the methodology, data sources, assumptions, and calibration methods.
  • An interactive industry sectors explorer: an HTML interface for exploring commodity flow profiles by economic activity and enterprise size.
  • An interactive products explorer : an HTML interface for exploring commodity flow profiles by product category.

This webpage will be progressively expanded to provide more detailed documentation of each modelling module, including execution scripts and intermediate results from the successive reconstruction and calibration stages.
